Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Pat Meehan won't seek re-election

  • Rep. Patrick Meehan R-Pa. will reportedly not seek reelection after he used taxpayer money to fund a settlement to a former aide who claimed he sexually harassed her

The report comes less than a week after an article in The New York Times said the Republican from Pennsylvania used thousands in taxpayer funds to settle a sexual harassment complaint with a former aide.

Alexis Ronickher, a lawyer for the former aide, blasted the congressman for speaking so publicly about the situation after agreeing to keep it quiet.

But after the woman became involved in a serious relationship with someone outside the office a year ago, Mr. Meehan professed his romantic desires for her - first in person, and then in a handwritten letter - and he grew hostile when she did not reciprocate, the people familiar with her time in the office said.

Meehan, a former USA attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, should still possess a prosecutor's sense of how evidence establishes guilt.

If Meehan's betrayal of the trust of the public and his constituents are bad enough to end his congressional career, why should we wait until next January to be rid of him?

He said he had developed strong feelings for the woman in the seven years she had worked for him, and that he reacted badly when he discovered that she had a romantic interest in another man.

The settlement had been kept secret, and Meehan has continually refused to say how much taxpayer money he paid as part of the agreement.

Feeling he had handled the news of her boyfriend "poorly", Meehan later wrote her the two-page note, which he said was meant to clear the air and encourage her in her new relationship - and which his office shared with the Inquirer Tuesday.

The House Ethics committee has also opened an investigation into Meehan's handling of the claim.

Meehan, a four-term lawmaker, drew backlash Wednesday from comedian Stephen Colbert, among others, after he referred to his alleged victim as his "soulmate" in attempting to defend his actions.
