Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said on Thursday that Pakistan sticks to its stance that the recent U.S. drone strike targeted an Afghan refugee camp near Kurram Agency.

Pakistan's Foreign Office on Wednesday said if NATO-led coalition forces continued with their drone strikes on its soil, cooperation in the fight against terrorism could be affected.

The US Embassy in Pakistan on Thursday dismissed a claim by Islamabad that US forces bombed a refugee camp on its territory.

The US and Afghanistan for years have accused Pakistan of providing refuge to the Haqqani network, a claim that Islamabad denies.

Local officials have told AFP that the pre-dawn strike took place more than 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Afghan border, in the village of Mamuzai in Kurram district in Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal region, where militants once operated with impunity.

Almost 1.4 million Afghan refugees remain in Pakistan, according to UNHCR figures. "Validates Pak's stance that early and dignified return of Afghan Refugees to Afghanistan is essential", he tweeted.

According to media, Haqqani Network Commander Ehsan alias Khawari and two of his companions were killed during the strike.

"Pakistan has also been stressing the need of early repatriation of Afghan refugees, as their presence in Pakistan helps Afghan terrorists to melt and morph among them".

There has been a slight uptick in United States drone strikes inside Pakistan in the mountainous border regions bordering Afghanistan since President Donald Trump took office in January 2017, though they are a long way off their peak in 2010.

According to a senior government official in Kurram, the drone fired one missile at a two-room compound, killing the militant and destroying the building. The strike occurred in the Mata Sangar area of Kurram. Hours before, at least one person was injured in a strike in Lower Kurram Agency.

The drone fired two missiles at the house in Speen Thall.
