Mississippi State's rally falls short at Alabama

  • Mike Locksley to be Alabama's next offensive coordinator

The Crimson Tide (13-6, 5-2), which had beaten South Carolina, LSU and No. 17 Auburn in their previous three games, led by as many as 20 points in the first half, but saw the Bulldogs pull even several times in the second half before prevailing.

Dazon Ingram and Braxton Key kept the young Alabama basketball team from fading late. According to Chris Low of ESPN, Saban has tabbed Mike Locksley as the team's new offensive coordinator while Locksley will also serve as the program's quarterbacks coach.

While Locksley is not necessarily a household name in the way that Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian were under Saban, that might actually be a desirable thing and, if nothing else, the Tide are once again set up for big-time success.

The Bulldogs began chipping away at the deficit in the second half, outscoring Alabama 32-13 to tie the game at 54 by the 6:50 mark. In his ninth game back after preseason knee surgery, Key has his best game of the year, scoring 16 points, his first double-figure effort of the season.

Alabama represents the ninth coaching staff that Locksley has been a part of.

"When we heard (Sexton) wasn't playing, we all just had to step up (and handle the ball) by committee", junior backup point guard Avery Johnson Jr. said Friday.

A dunk by Holman cut the deficit to 64-62 with 22 seconds left.

"Lamar got us back in the game with some offensive firepower and took great shots", Howland said. "We came out where they were the aggressors and we were on our heels. I thought we turned that around in the second half in our comeback". Key's 16 points led Alabama, which also got a 13-point effort from Daniel Giddens. The Tide did well in sharing the basketball with 16 assists while its fast hands led to 19 points off of 16 Mississippi State turnovers. The Tide held on to the lead with a three by Braxton Key.
