  • Britain Wants Comprehensive Trade Deal With EU, May Says

TaoiseachIreland's Varadkar: "The EU is at a decisive point" has told MEPs in Strasbourg plenary of the European Parliament that the bloc is at a decisive point in its future but ready with a renewed appetite to face the challenges of the future, during the premiere of debates between EU heads of state and government ant the MEPs.

Irish premier Leo Varadkar, whose country is directly affected by the Brexit decision due to its land border with Britain, insists there is no "plot" but said it would not be undemocratic to hold a new vote.

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker is maintaining the offer for Britain to remain in the EU even after both sides have entered the second phase of their divorce negotiations.

It comes just one day after Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said he was open to a "change of heart" from the UK. "That must mean that European Union citizens who arrive after our departure should no longer enjoy treaty rights that derive from our membership", Migration Watch UK head Lord Green said. We are not throwing out the British, we want them to stay.

But the official denied it was a ploy to divide the British side in the tough Brexit negotiations, saying: "Whatever Tusk might dream it doesn't influence how he will negotiate, which is based on a 99.9 percent assumption that the United Kingdom will leave".

"We need to respect the difference of views on many things but also we need to work in a pragmatic way to improve peoples lives on the island of Ireland as a whole and I think we have shown in the past that we can do that in many areas of practical cooperation in terms of north south cooperation".

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Thursday that she believed the City of London would continue to be a global financial centre after Brexit.

Cabinet Office minister David Lidington, who chairs several Brexit ministerial committees, said the suggestion by some European Union leaders that Britain might change its mind about leaving the bloc was a "red herring".

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told legislators that it was essential there would be no backsliding on those commitments made at the summit last month.

She said the number of finance job moves as a result of Brexit are likely to be at the lower end of estimates ranging from 5,000 to 75,000 jobs, with the government keen to preserve the industry's standing.
