Col. Dennis Bythewood, director of the Space and Missile Systems Center's remote sensing directorate, told reporters January 16 the launch will meet the service's.

Liftoff is scheduled for 7:52 p.m. EST.

About 42 minutes later, the rocket deployed a 10,000-pound addition to an Air Force constellation that serves as a "bell-ringer" warning of ballistic missile launches around the globe, potentially including nuclear threats.

If the launch is successful it will be the 125th launch for the company since it was founded in 2006 and it will mark the 75th launch of the Atlas V rocket since its inaugural launch in 2002, according to ULA.

ULA expects a 90 percent chance of favorable weather conditions for Friday's launch.

The Atlas V booster and its Centaur upper stage lit up the Florida night sky to launch the new military satellite mission, called the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) GEO Flight 4, from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral. The SBIRS program is created to act as a missile-warning system and provide technical intelligence.

The ULA has already confirmed that the countdown to launch is underway, adding that this is one of the USA's "highest priority" missions. Two other satellites, SBIRS GEO Flights 5 and 6, are expected to follow. There were no details available about which orbit the SBIRS payload would hopefully be delivered to on Thursday evening.
