"Social media enables people to spread information faster than ever before, and if we don't specifically tackle these problems, then we end up amplifying them".

Facebook said earlier this month it would be shifting its News Feed algorithms to prioritize The News Feed is currently created to prioritize relevant content from friends and family, but now will highlight content that people are likely to regardless if it comes from a peer or a company.

"There's too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today", Zuckerberg said.

He said Facebook considered asking outside experts to choose the most reputable news sources, but that doing so would most likely have led to an "objectivity problem". Many people reasonably interpreted that statement to mean they would see less news shared by publishers in their feed. "This data will help to inform ranking in News Feed".

"We surveyed a diverse and representative sample of people using Facebook across the U.S. to gauge their familiarity with, and trust in, various different sources of news". He said the company chose to rely on member surveys as the most "objective" way to rank trust in news sources. Rather, they'll let the users decide what counts as a trusted source. One example is the Bolivian news site, Página Siete, which saw a steep drop in traffic from Facebook. The report offers some insight into potential pitfalls for the algorithm changes Facebook is planning to roll out in the next few months. Publications that do not score highly as trusted by the community may see a decrease. A former Facebook manager recently spoke to NBC News and said that the company is only interested in growing its influence and making money.

The social network has long struggled with fake or misleading news on its platform.

And you can choose to view your "Pages Feed" to see news updates from any media outlet or brand that you've chosen to follow. Now Facebook wants to return to its social media roots and be all about individuals talking with each other.
