Next iOS update will allow users to disable iPhone battery throttling

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook pauses during his visit to Reno Nev. for a ceremony celebrating a new Apple warehouse on Wednesday Jan. 17 2018.

For those unaware, Apple was last month found to intentionally throttle down the performance of the iPhones with each iOS update, in order to keep the battery performance consistent.

The update, according to Cook, will arrive next month in a developer release prior to a global rollout-adding "this hasn't been done before".

Tim Cook cleared the company's intentions by saying that Apple "Deeply Apologize" to their customers, who thought that the company had other objectives.

The company claims the software feature was meant to improve battery health for older iPhone models. To recall, the company also started compensating affected users by reducing the prices of replacement batteries, but that development eventually pushed a major supply problem that is yet to be addressed.

Apple has also hinted that iOS will be updated to give users more information about their battery, and the ability to turn off the throttling feature, and that this will be out early 2018.

Late last December, Apple shocked the world with its admission that it was indeed slowing down some of the older iPhones, for long a rumour floating on the internet.

This is a very significant change to company's policy, as when first iPhone came in to being, Apple said that iPhone users will never need to replace batteries. And, we will tell somebody that we're reducing your performance by some amount in order to not have an unexpected restart. The consumer group called the Shanghai Consumer Council gave Apple a deadline, specifically before Friday of this week, to provide a reply, state news agency Xinhua noted.

Cook says that the company does not encourage users to turn it off, and reiterates that their intentions are "in service of the user".

However, Digitimes also said that some sources argued that the iPhone X's momentum was dragged down by slower-than-expected iPhone 8 and 8 Plus sales. It is what they offer to the user and the kind of experience that everyone gets every time they purchase a new iPhone. Now, Apple won't secretly throttle the performance of the older iPhones given the reason it might bring bad days for them. While no timetable was given for when the public update will be released, the fact that Apple is planning to test it so soon suggests that it isn't far off.
