  • Agni-5 was conducted on 19 April 2012

The test firing of the ballistic missile took place from Abdul Kalam island off the Odisha coast at 9:53 am.

India successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday (Jan 18) that puts all of China within striking distance, the country's Defence Ministry said in a tweet.

The ministry dubbed the successful test a "major boost" to the country's defence capabilities. The country, which has successfully tested this type of missile five times since 2012, last completed a launch in December 2016. Until recently, the longest range missile India had was Agni-III with a range of 3000-3500 km.

Vipin Narang, an associate professor of political science at MIT who studies nuclear proliferation, said Thursday's test did not demonstrate any "new capability, (this) was simply a developmental test before India inducts it into operational range".

The missile's canister-launch version makes it deadlier since it gives the armed forces requisite flexibility to swiftly transport and fire the missile from anywhere they want.

India has at present in its armoury of Agni series, Agni-1 with 700 km range, Agni-2 with 2,000 km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with with 2,500 km to more than 3500 km range. While these missiles are mainly geared towards Pakistan, the Agni-IV and Agni-V are specifically meant for deterrence against China. This range was not sufficient to reach targets on the extreme eastern and north- eastern region of China. The nuclear-capable long-range projectile, capable of striking a target at 5,000km, was sacked off from the country's eastern state of Odisha. With a range of more than 5,000km, Agni-V is capable of delivering a single 1.5-ton warhead to the northernmost corner of China.
