Myanmar, Bangladesh to Begin Return of Rohingya Refugees

  • Bangladesh Is Sending Rohingya Back To Myanmar — That's Not Good

Displaced Rohingya now held in vast refugee camps in Bangladesh have expressed extreme reluctance to return.

Bangladesh issued a statement Tuesday saying the repatriations will begin next week, with the goal of completing the process within the next two years.

"The repatriation would be completed preferably within two years from the commencement of repatriation", said Bangladesh foreign ministry in a statement yesterday, following the first joint working group meeting (JWG) in Naypyitaw on January 15-16.

The statement says Bangladesh will establish five transit camps along its border with Myanmar for the returnees. In this respect, the EU's initiative aims to support the implementation of the bilateral repatriation agreement between the governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh, which was signed on 23 November 2017.

However, the Rohingya people did not find relief in Cox's Bazar, one of the largest refugee camps in the world, either.

More than 650,000 Rohingya Muslims fled to neighboring Bangladesh after Myanmar's army launched an atrocious attack on Rohingya villages in August.

Also, Myanmar agreed to repatriate at least 7,000 Rohingyas who are stuck near the border areas. The reader's can rely on the content at their own will. "How can you expect the traumatised people to return?" he said, referring to Myanmar's reiteration of commitment in the Physical Arrangement to stop the outflow of Myanmar residents to Bangladesh.

Although Myanmar claimed it was a crackdown against terrorists, the United Nations have said the operation amounted to "ethnic cleansing" to remove the minority from the Western Rakhine state.

Though Myanmar says it would provide citizenship to some Rohingya, they have no reason to trust Myanmar, said Asif Munier.

Abd-us-Salam, who is more than 100 years old, has fled three military crackdowns in Myanmar.

Before the crisis, it was believed that 1.1 million Rohingya lived in Myanmar, predominantly in the Rakhine State.

UNHCR's Gluck said that Rohingya refugees said they would only consider returning if they saw positive developments in relation to their legal status and citizenship, the security situation in Rakhine State and their ability to enjoy basic rights back home.

The Bangladesh delegation said that orphans and "children born out of unwarranted incidence", a reference to rapes that result in pregnancies, would also be sent back.
