Google App Finds Your Fine Art Lookalike

  • 'Face match' makes Google Arts & Culture most downloaded free app on US App Store

It pulls from Google's digital collection of artworks from museums around the world.

One asterisk on the app is that it's not available in all areas, as a Google Spokesperson told SFGate that the app is limited to the United States, minus IL and Texas.

If you live somewhere that doesn't have access to the feature just yet, a good way to stay aware of when it's coming your way is by following the Google Arts & Culture account on Twitter. However, do not open the app immediately after downloading.

People are finding themselves in museums around the world: Images of everyday folks posing with their fine-art doppelgängers have flooded social media. Make sure VPN is turned on and location should be set to the USA. You won't find it if you live in Houston: Because Google still considers it experimental, the viral feature is blocked in certain regions-ours included. The "selfie matching" feature should appear, provided your VPN is working. Now, following the launch of the new tool, the Google Arts & Culture app climbed to the number one free app over the weekend, according to the app metric site - App Annie. The section says " Is your Portrait in a museum?". Tap "get started", and you'll be guided through the process.

Unfortunately, the app requires you take a selfie in real time, meaning no uploading embarrassing snaps of your friends you've saved on your camera roll for this goal (or, for me, my cats back home in Vermont).

Get the app, and scroll down to find the "Is your face in a museum?" project. Users will have to give this app access to the front camera in order to allow the selfies.

Apps that involve uploading one's face, getting feedback and sharing the results aren't always a great idea.

Some of the matches are spot on, while others are hilariously off. Celebrities including Kumail Nanjiani, Amanda Seyfried and Kate Hudson helped spread the word about the app which went viral over the Martin Luther King Jr.
