WIKUS DE WET via Getty Images H&M said it had withdrawn from sale a green hoodie with the inscription "coolest monkey in the jungle" after an ad featuring a black child triggered racism accusation.

Angered by a "racist" advert of Swedish fashion retailer H&M, protesters from the South African Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) movement ransacked several stores in the Gauteng province of the country.

Responding to a customer inquiry H&M South Africa said the offending product "was not available in South Africa".

Eyewitness reports also indicated that EFF supporters had protested at the H&M Waterfront store.

The worldwide chain store earlier this week apologised after an outcry on Twitter over an advert depicting a black child wearing green hoodie with the inscription "coolest monkey in the jungle".

But Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, spokesman for the ultra-left EFF, said that was too little, too late.

EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu congratulated members via twitter for physically confronting racism.

Police also cautioned members of the public during the protest to avoid the mall even though they maintained the situation were "under control".

While nobody was arrested, police arrived and fired rubber bullets into the crowd scattering the protesters.

"Our position is simple, we have got this wrong and we are deeply sorry", H&M added in a post on its Facebook page.

National Basketball Association star LeBron James, rapper Diddy and singer The Weeknd are among the celebrities who expressed shock in recent days over the H&M image, which has been removed.

The image copped widespread criticism, with United States singer The Weekend among those to voice his distaste, saying he was "shocked and embarrassed".

"We have taken down the image and we have removed the garment", the statement said.
