Missile alert sent to Hawaii residents by mistake, officials say

The Hawaii Emergency Management agency tweeted that the alert was false within 15 minutes of it being sent out around 8 a.m., but cellphone screenshots show a delay of almost 40 minutes between the original alert and another declaring it to be a false alarm. "THIS IS NOT A DRILL", alarmed residents, who posted screenshots of the notification on Twitter, and prompted them to take shelter.

A moment crisis caution was sent to telephones in Hawaii 38 minutes after the underlying message affirming the false alert.

"I am meeting this morning with top officials of the State Department of Defense and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency to determine what caused this morning's false alarm and to prevent it from happening again.".

It came amid a growing threat from North Korea's missile and nuclear programme.

"False alarm. But for all the other misfires and rogue sirens here, what does it say that we live in a time where we have to assume it's possible?"

Gabbard tweeted her message out, shortly before the military also reported that the message was a false one, but it took approximately 35 minutes before the alert was reported to be a false one.

"Hawaii - this is a false alarm", she tweeted.

The mistaken alert, which was attributed human error, warned that a projectile was heading for the Hawaii.

The clearest explanation we've received so far is that this was "human error" and that the state was in the midst of conducting a drill when the error was made. "There is nothing more important to Hawai'i than professionalizing and fool-proofing this process".

"I think it depends on the carrier", he said, "what is the carrier or the company that sponsors that, but we'll review that too, because all of them should have gotten this".

Hawaii experienced a terrifying false alarm on Saturday morning.

"This is a real threat facing Hawaii", she said. At a time of heightened tensions, we need to make sure all information released to the community is accurate.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency sought to calm nerves soon after the accidental alarm. White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said it "was purely a state exercise".

While the message caused concern on social media, the Hawaii Office of Emergency Management quickly responded on Twitter, saying, "NO missile threat to Hawaii".

Governor David Ige promised to "get to the bottom" of the mistake, though no official internal investigation has been announced.
