  • India gets tough says talks and terror don't go together

THE GOVERNMENT on Thursday confirmed that National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met his Pakistani counterpart Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua (retd) as part of "operational-level talks", and stressed that "talks on terror can definitely go ahead".

"The spokesperson stated that Doval and Janjua also dwelled upon on how terrorism" terrorism should not affect "this region" in their "operational-level talks". "We of course raised the issue of cross-border terrorism in those talks", he said.

He also appeared to borrow a leaf out of Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu's book with a play of words, saying: "We have said that "terror and talks" cannot go together but "talks on terror" can definitely go ahead". According to the Pakistani official, the meeting came a day after Indian death-row prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav met with his family on December 25 in Islamabad.

When this question was posed to Kumar at the regular MEA briefing, the spokesperson said dates of such meetings are fixed days in advance.

The meeting is learnt to have taken place in Bangkok on December 26.

"Similarly, the NSA-level engagement is part of operational-level talks".

India has planned to intensify its pressure on Pakistan to take strong steps against terror financing during the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) plenary organized in Paris, next month, reported The Economic Times quoting people familiar with the development.

In addition, the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries have talked as and when need arise, though the formal FS-level talks, which were precursor to the CBD, too have been put on abeyance.

The "talks on terror" model to engage Pakistan is a break in India's position that India had taken following the attack on the Pathankot airbase when New Delhi had cancelled the Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue (CBD).
