It's understood this will be in addition to local news that already appears in Facebook's News Feed and on publishers' pages.

Facebook's News Partnerships team is spearheading the experiment, employing both human curators and machine learning to populate the content in the new sections.

Commentators point out that the social network's reported foray into local news publishing segment comes at a time when it is looking to fix the problem of misinformation and fake news on its platform. The initiative is called the Facebook Journalism Project and the first observable product to come from it is now in soft-launch in a few areas in the USA.

Users in the initial test batch of cities can access the feature in the bottom menu of the mobile Facebook app.

Facebook is cautiously hand-selecting local publishers to feature on this new section of the app that should help keep fake news at bay to a large extent and thus substantially prevent the dissemination of false information to the user base.

The company is now testing the feature in 6 states of the US.

In an effort to up its signal to noise ratio, Facebook may go local. This section is being tested in five cities of America however the company plans to launch it globally once its gets approved in its test phase.

Going "Local" spells out the theme for Facebook over the last 18 months as it started providing more posts from local politicians and is also expanding Marketplace, its Craigslist-style platform that is used by people for sale of products to their neighbors.
