The board president had ruled her out of order, saying the public comment period was for comments, not questions. Moments later, Hargrave is seen being taken to the ground, handcuffed, and dragged out of the building by the much larger marshal as fellow teachers looked on in horror.
The superintendent of Vermilion Parish schools says the board won't press charges against a teacher who was removed from the board's special meeting Monday night.
"What are you doing, can you explain!"
According to local news station KATC, Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle Schools, asked a couple of questions - which board officials answered - during the public-comment only portion of the meeting.
When the officer told her to "stop resisting", she responded: "I am not, you just pushed me to the floor.I am way smaller than you".
At least one school board member said at the meeting that the treatment Hargrave received was unacceptable, noting that she had "never seen a man removed from this room".
Teacher Deyshia Hargrave spoke up during public comment and said, "You're making our jobs more hard".
Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.
A woman who was in the meeting later commented on the incident.
After she was called on a second time, a city marshal stepped in and asked her to leave. She was, however, charged with "remaining after being forbidden" and "resisting an officer", both of which can be brought by a marshal, and do not require the school board's cooperation.
"I have a serious issue with a superintendent or any person of leadership getting any type of raise", Hargrave said.
While the board members did recognize it was the teacher's turn to speak, it's unclear if they called the marshal into the room to cut her off or if the officer acted on his own.
It also asked to include them in the OBC quota. "We think it appropriate to send this issue to a larger bench", they said. The law lists numerous actions that people with these beliefs can take without facing legal action.
