  • Toyota unveiled its autonomous vehicle concept e Palette on Monday Jan. 8 2017 at CES in Las Vegas

The companies will collaborate on vehicle planning and application concepts. It will come in three sizes: a bus-sized vehicle, a shuttle and a small delivery vehicle sized to run on sidewalks.

Toyota provided a glimpse into the future of mobility with the e-Palette concept, which made its debut at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show on Monday.

In addition, Toyota will provide an array of services to help e-Palette customers use their vehicles, including leasing and insurance support and fleet management.

Amazon, Pizza Hut and Uber are already coming up with ideas for how to use the tech, as is Mazda and the Chinese ride-hailing giant DiDi.

Companies that operate the e-Palette will load their own self-driving software of choice, while Toyota's "Guardian" technology keeps the goods safe on the road.

Toyota plans to debut the actual vehicle system at the 2020 Olympics and bring e-Pallete to cities in the early 2020s.

Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation today revealed a rather left of field take on the increasingly sexy topic of autonomous driving.

A large screen behind Toyoda played a video rendering of a customer walking into an e-Palette mobile shoe store.

It can be pimped out with purpose-built interiors that will differ depending on use.

A lot of what we've seen from other automakers are perhaps better classified as side bets; case in point, Volkswagen's chief executive expressed skepticism about the extent of the potential of mobility services on stage with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang yesterday, despite the fact that VW has its own mobility sub-brand, Moia. has signed on as a partner for Toyota's new mobility alliance, which will develop fully autonomous electric vehicles to deliver packages, pizza and people to desired destinations.

"Just think how great e-Palette will be at Burning Man", Mr. Toyoda said during a press event, technology website Engadget reported.

Toyota is by no means the only automaker exploring such concepts.

When commercialized, the e-Palette type of vehicle is expected to offer "level 4" autonomous driving capability, which is called by the industry "high automation". Not at all like different automakers that may have drivers hit a catch to change all through full self-governing mode, Toyota would have it work noiselessly out of sight.
