Packers continue GM interviews with top internal candidate Friday

  • Green Bay reportedly promotes Brian Gutekunst to general manager

The new Packers GM played two years of college football for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse until a shoulder injury cut his college career short.

He was promoted to director of player personnel for the Packers back in March of 2016 and has spent almost two decades in the team's front office.

By hiring Gutekunst, Murphy passed over Russ Ball, the team's Vice-President of Football Operations/Player Finance and Eliot Wolf, the son of former GM Ron Wolf, now the team's Director of Football Operations.

Gutekunst, who has been with the Packers in a scouting or personnel role for the past 19 seasons, was slated to interview for the Texans' GM vacancy Sunday and made the trip to Houston before accepting his new role with Green Bay. There are reports that Ball will stay on, working on contracts and cap matters, while Wolf sounds like he could be leaving Green Bay.

Gutekunst was one of several in-house candidates to replace Thompson as GM.

Also of interest here is this means good things for Mike McCarthy. On defense, veteran coordinator Dom Capers was sacked after a season in which the unit failed to generate consistent pass rush and had to rely on inexperienced players at cornerback because of injuries and turnover. And perhaps that's all the Packers truly need.
