The plane was grounded overnight for maintenance, which meant the passengers were stranded for the night in Anchorage.

Airport officials confirmed that the Thursday night landing at Ted Stevens International Airport was due to "a passenger smearing feces everywhere".

Lt. Holler said the man did not try to interfere with the flight crew, and was cooperative when questioned by airport police officers and the F.B.I.

"United flight 895, travelling from Chicago to Hong Kong, diverted to Anchorage last night due to a disruptive passenger", the airline wrote in a statement.

The man, a 22-year-old Vietnamese passport holder with U.S. residency, was escorted off the plane in handcuffs and met by law enforcement in the terminal, Gamache said.

According to airport police, the alleged bathroom-destroyer cooperated with United Airlines staff and was escorted into police custody.

Airport police told the news station that no charges were filed against the passenger, but he was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Passengers were put up in hotels and the airline was working to get them to their destinations, the statement said.

Earlier in December, a flight faced a lavatory problem of another sort, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.

The flight landed in Anchorage about 6:30 p.m. and was met by local and federal law enforcement, police said.

No one was injured during the incident, KTUU reports.
