Fodder scam case: Lalu Prasad Yadav gets jail term of 3.5 years

Ranchi- RJD supremo Lalu Prasad was on Saturday sentenced to three and a half years jail in a fodder scam case.

CBI court judge Shiv Pal Singh, who had convicted Prasad, along with 10 others on December 23, also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on him for two cases in the scam. The sentencing was heard via video conference.

Prasad's son and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said in Patna a bail plea will also be moved in the high court.

Furthermore, in the wake of court's ruling and pronouncement of sentence against Lalu Prasad Yadav senior members of the RJD are expected to meet today to discuss the party's strategy and the "emerging political situation". "I am sure our Chief Laluji will attend RJD's crucial meeting tomorrow" says Bihar party chief Ramchandra Purve.

Lalu and 14 others were found guilty in the Deoghar Treasury fodder scam case of 1990's on December 23. Trial began before the special CBI court, Ranchi in February 2002.

Lalu Prasad is at present cooling his heels in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi.

Other convicts - Phool Chand, Mahesh Prasad, Bake Julious, Sunil Kumar, Sushil Kumar, Sudhir Kumar and Raja Ram - have also been sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and Rs 5 lakh fine each.

This is the second fodder scam case in which Prasad has been jailed.

The court sentenced all 16 convicts in the case, from seven years to three-and-a-half years.

There were 34 accused in the case, out of which 11 died during the trial, while one turned CBI approver and admitted to the crime.

On September 30, 2013, Yadav, Jagannath Mishra and several others were convicted in another case pertaining to illegal withdrawal of Rs 37.7 crore from the Chaibasa Treasury in the early 1990s.
