  • Kim made the shocking warning in his New Year address

Haley said the US will call for an emergency session of the U.N.in NY, as well as at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Chun Yung-woo, a former South Korean national security adviser, said Seoul should have taken more time before reacting to Kim's comments.

During a news conference at the United Nations on Tuesday, Ambassador Haley applauded the Iranian uprising.

"We are still communicating with people in Iran on Facebook and Twitter and we're constantly updating those two sites in Farsi", said Goldstein.

She noted that "dozens have already been killed", before harkening back to the failed Green Revolution in the first year of the Obama presidency. "All freedom-loving people must stand with their cause", Nikki Haley told reporters at the UN's NY headquarters.

Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday Iran's government is "being tested by its own citizens" after three days of protests against the clerical regime.

Haley said "nowhere is the urgency of peace, security, and freedom being more tested than in Iran", noting that "citizens are taking to the streets to protest the oppression of their own government". "We want to help amplify the voices of the Iranian people". "If the Iranian dictatorship's history is any guide, we can expect more outrageous abuses in the days to come. We must not make that mistake again".

In a formal statement from the former S.C. governor, Haley compared protesting Iranians to others living under "oppressive governments" in Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela.

The demonstrations in Iran, which have erupted against a backdrop of rising food and gasoline prices, began Thursday in the northeastern city of Mashhad before spreading to other cities.

"The civilized world must remain united and vigilant against the rogue state's development of a nuclear arsenal".

The State Department has been communicating with protesters through their Farsi-language social media accounts, posting statements of support from USA and world leaders, despite the Iranian government's decision to block access to some websites. "I don't think we should be silent".

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said North Korea might be "trying to drive a wedge of some sort" between the United States and South Korea and added that while it was up to Seoul to decide who it talked to: "We are very skeptical of Kim Jong Un's sincerity in sitting down and having talks".
