If Gruden Gets Raiders Job, He'd Be Interested in Hiring Jets OC

  • Jon Gruden: 'I Think I Am Being Considered' for Raiders Head Coaching Job

The Daily News reported if Gruden does go to Oakland he might try to recruit Jets offensive coordinator John Morton to go with him and that NY will not stand in his way. However, with so many coaching vacancies expected, that shouldn't last long.

Gruden, 54, coached the Raiders to a 38-26 record over four seasons before being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by Al Davis in 2001. Asked specifically if he was a candidate, Gruden said, "Well, I think I am being considered, yes". After ranking top 10 offensively in points and yards last season, they are 23rd and 19th, respectively, this year.

The Raiders are prepared to make a serious offer to Jon Gruden in hopes that he would return as head coach of the Raiders, according to an ESPN report. Because of this, there is now some talk that Del Rio may be fired at the end of the season. Yet, following Oakland's 6-10 finish, including an terrible regression on offense, owner Mark Davis apparently will go all in to pursue Gruden with his team just two years away from moving to Las Vegas. The Raiders won just 13 games in the three seasons before he arrived.

Another consideration for Gruden is that he is scheduled to continue with his broadcasting gig with ESPN through the playoffs, and he wants to honor that commitment. This time, it feels real, as he could the Raiders' next head coach in the coming days. Gannon is now a TV analyst for CBS and was in the booth for the Raiders' finale against the Chargers on Sunday. But again, Gruden has not coached since 2008. Morton was also an offensive assistant for the Raiders from 2002-04.

The Raiders had a breakthrough season in 2016 with 12 wins, but it ended in disappointment when a broken leg for quarterback Derek Carr in Week 16 cost the Raiders a chance at a division title and led to a first-round playoff loss.

"From what I've heard he's a good coach", Nelson said.

Several players said they know Gruden, who was in the booth for the Raiders' Christmas night loss to the Eagles, more for his work on "Monday Night Football". "I spoke with [owner] Mark Davis after the game and Mark let me know that he's not going to be bringing me back".
