  • LG to show off 88-inch 8K OLED TV at CES

However, LG will be unveiling some more products at the event.

In a pre-CES press release, LG says: "The 8K OLED displays can also maintain their slimmer design, as the self-emissive OLEDs do not need backlight units".

LG will show a whopping 88-in 8K OLED display at CES, marking the Korean technology giant as the maker of the largest 8K OLED in the world. As the Engadget report points LG Display is supplying large OLED panels to Sony and Panasonic as well, while Samsung has shifted focused to QLED TVs. In addition, LG's 8K TV would only be upscaling 4K contents are we are yet to witness native 8K contents whether in physical form or digital.

As with the TV, there is no information available with the pricing.

The product has 33 million pixels (7680 × 4320 pixels), 16 times the resolution of a full HD display (1920 × 1080) and quadruple that of a UHD display (3840 × 2160). While this combination is now available for all major brands including the likes of LG, Sony, and Panasonic, except for Samsung, which has shifted its focus on QLED TVs. LG's 77-inch TV costs a whopping $20,000.

Earlier, the largest OLED screen size was 77-inches and it only came with 4K support. Not because LG pays us to say so or because we just have a bias towards their products (we're also nearly invariably critical of the company's rather crappy budget 4K UHD TVs), but because OLED really is some of the best 4K TV display technology we've ever seen for faithfully rendering consumer entertainment in 4K HDR.

However, the 8K OLED TV will not be hitting stores anytime soon, as the company is expected wait it out for 8K resolution content to enter the mainstream market. As the LG's biggest rival Samsung has changed its strategy of making OLED displays, the Korean manufacturer is expanding its reach to other diverse markets in Asia, especially Japan. Meanwhile, the company has also suggested that it will also be announcing three new flagship monitors with interesting features as well.
