Why the Colts fired Chuck Pagano as head coach after 6 seasons

  • Luck returns to Colts' complex with 'better' shoulder

Owner Jim Irsay almost made this move twice in recent years, and with the franchise struggling and the future of Andrew Luck in doubt and with rookie general manager Chris Ballard embarked on a long-term reshaping of the organization, more changes are coming in 2018, league sources indicated.

The Chuck Pagano era is over in Indianapolis.

Pagano's fate comes as little surprise following a rash of reports that he would be let go after missing the playoffs for a third straight season.

"Chuck Pagano provided Colts fans with many exciting wins and memories as head coach of the Colts", Colts Owner & CEO Jim Irsay said in a statement. He was diagnosed with Leukemia, and spent most of the season in treatment. As a result, his CHUCKSTRONG Foundation has raised millions for cancer research.

Pagano was sacked Sunday after the Colts' 22-13 victory over the Texans in what he told his team earlier this week would be their "last rodeo".

"We are thankful for Chuck's contributions to our franchise and community". Pagano was sacked by the team after the Indianapolis finished their 2017-18 campaign with a 4-12 record.

The team's 12 losses this season are their most since 2011, but the Colts haven't been a viable AFC contender in years.

But Indianapolis, which advanced one round further in each of three preseason trips, were dismantled by the Patriots in the 2014 AFC title game - the "Deflategate" game - and haven't been back to the playoffs since.

During the 2012-13 National Football League season, Pagano missed 12 games due to his battle with leukemia but rallied the Colts to the playoffs.

NFL Media's Mike Silver tweeted Saturday afternoon that Tom Cable, the' Seahawks assistant head coach and offensive line coach, will receive "serious consideration" to replace Pagano.
