Raiders might lure Jon Gruden back to coaching

  • Stretching for touchdown can backfire into costly fumble

Among the perks the Raiders are said to be throwing at Gruden is a partial ownership stake in the team, which is unprecedented.

"The Oakland Raiders are preparing to pursue ESPN analyst Jon Gruden with an offer so strong it could even include an ownership stake in the team, according to league sources".

The Raiders gave Del Rio in the offseason a four-year extension through 2020, but are willing to part with the skipper if Gruden, long a white whale in coaching searches, becomes available. As it turns out, Gruden may return to coach the Raiders.

Gannon, a current broadcaster, played the final six years of his 17-year career in Oakland. "I can't say I haven't taken any phone calls".

Gruden has always been rumored as a coaching candidate for multiple teams since entering the broadcast booth as color commentator for Monday Night Football back in 2009.

A disclosure: I'm a Buccaneers fan (the team Gruden spurned to entertain talks with the Raiders), and had talked myself into Gruden becoming the next head coach of the team. Guys want to bounce ideas off me. Under Gruden, the Raiders managed to reach the AFC Championship Game in 2001, though they lost to the Baltimore Ravens. But his connection with the Raiders and the fact that it was reported by Adam Schefter and Chris Mortenson, Gruden's colleagues at ESPN, lend this one more credibility. "I'm here to help people".

However, the Raiders - a trendy Super Bowl pick entering the season - have been one of the NFL's biggest disappointments this season with a (not nice) 6-9 record.

Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area asked Raiders owner Mark Davis about the report. Sure that's not bad, but it seems unusual that any team would go to these lengths to bring him back now. The following year, the Raiders would get back in the playoffs, but would strike out in the Divisional Round at the hands of the New England Patriots.

Gruden will have not been in the professional coaching ranks in almost a full decade by the time next season rolls around.

Oakland's top brass must be growing frustrated of Del Rio's performance with the Raiders not making the playoffs for the second time in three years under Del Rio.

Gannon never has coached; he went straight to broadcasting upon his retirement.
