  • Liberians Elect Soccer Star George Weah As Next President

Liberia's President-elect, George Manneh Weah, has assured Liberians that transforming the lives of all Liberians would be the "singular mission and focus of my presidency".

The president-elect said the country was open and ready for business, calling on investors, partners and Liberians in the Diaspora to join hands with his administration to build the economy.

Weah had run in the country's last two elections, winning the first round of the 2005 vote that eventually went to Sirleaf.

Weah will take office from Nobel Prize Laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf later in January.

Liberia, a nation founded by freed American slaves, is seeing its first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years as Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Prize victor, steps down.

In his first public comments since his rival conceded Friday, Weah tweeted in French in response to congratulations from French President Emmanuel Macron.

"Weah honored Sirleaf, calling her 'the Iron Lady of Africa" and promising to 'build upon the institutional gains" her administration has made.

The French presidency says in a statement that Weah accepted the invitation.

The lawmaker who congratulate Weah pointed that the hardwork, persistence and steadfastness displayed by the football legend should be adopted by Nigerian youths in meeting their target goals in life.

"He vowed to fight the types of scandals that have plagued the West African nation, saying, 'Those looking to cheat the Liberian people through corruption will have no place".

The 51-year-old senator beat Vice President Joseph Boakai with 61.5 percent of the votes in Tuesday's runoff.

With more than 98 percent of votes counted late Thursday, Weah had received 61.5 percent of ballots while Boakai received 38.5 percent.

Former professional footballer George Weah has won the Liberia presidential run-off.

Liberia, a nation founded by freed American slaves, is seeing its first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years as Africa's first female president, Nobel Peace Prize victor Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, steps aside.

The former Chelsea and AC Milan star won the first round of the Presidential elections in October with 38.4% of the vote, against the 28.8% of the incumbent vice-president, Mr Boakai failure to secure an outright majority forced a run-off.
