  • Anand emerges King of Rapids

Anand's victory set the Chess community ablaze, as a number of current and former stars from around the world of chess poured in their good words for the 48-year-old on Twitter. "So, I came here nearly in a pessimistic frame of mind", Anand said. In his own inimitable style, Kasparov slammed Anand's detractors, especially those who say that he should retire. What's interesting is that Anand wasn't even expected to be part of the event. In 2010, Anand defended his title in the World Chess Championship against Veselin Topalov and in 2012 he set win against Boris Gelfand. "The crucial moment was the win against Magnus Carlsen".

Anand was placed joint second at the start of the final five rounds (11 to 15), fought back strongly to bag the title on tie-break after a three-way tie with Fedoseev and Ian Nepomniachtchi at 10.5 points from a possible 15.

Viswanathan Anand checks his final mate in rapid rounds of the tournament, while Ju Wenjun dominates the Women's tournament for the 2017 crown. "And then I started to feel the wind was behind me". 2-0 and he sealed the title with a tie- breaker. But it has been the most wonderful surprise. It was unexpected because I was not even planning coming to the tournament as it was announced very late.

"So, there's just all these unexpected feelings".

Yet here Anand is, champion of the world yet again, despite most experts writing him off when he lost his classical world title to Carlsen four years ago. There are those unexpected feelings and the most fantastic feeling of all was to have the title of World Champion again.

As for the other Indians, P Harikrishna finished 16th, Surya Shekhar Ganguly 60th, Vidit Gujarathi 61st, B Adhiban 65th and S P Sethuraman 96th.
