Chelsea v Stoke City

  • Jese Rodriguez wants to make a success of his Stoke loan spell says boss Mark Hughes

Clearly the Premier League is where he wants to be, with us.

Chelsea are now third in table, 16 points behind clear leaders Manchester City, but have closed the gap to Manchester United in second to just a point. They are coming off a 2-0 victory against the newly promoted Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday and have 42 points to their name.

Hughes had been under huge pressure going into a Christmas period that yielded a 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion and a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield, and those results had helped to move the spotlight away from his position as manager in the Potteries, although he could find himself under the cosh again if his team fail to cope with the loss of several first-team players.

The west London side, who won the title in style last term, are now in third place in the Premier League table as they look to try and get ahead of Manchester United in second.

Stoke must also do without the on-loan Kurt Zouma, who is ineligible to play against his parent club, as well as Bruno Martins Indi (groin injury) and Glen Johnson (knee injury).

Andreas Christensen could return to the team after missing the win over Brighton due to illness, meaning Gary Cahill could drop to the bench. Chelsea have won twice away since, including earlier this season when Morata's hat-trick powered an easy 4-0.

In spite of reports he could see out the season with his hometown Las Palmas under their new boss Paco Jemez, Hughes believes Jese wants to succeed in England.

On-loan France worldwide Kurt Zouma is ineligible to play against his parent club, while former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson is out with a knee injury.

In an end of year finale, Chelsea host Stoke City on Saturday in this Premier League clash.

"But he might get back to the level he needs to be at very soon, hopefully". Stoke City, in their current form aren't expected to give the reigning champions too much trouble, but Chelsea have had a bad record against relatively smaller teams this season.

The injury hit full back is a sought after talent, having been signed by Chelsea for £22 million from FC Augsburg in 2015, he is now wanted by Serie A side Fiorentina, who are keen to take him on loan for the remainder of the season.
