  • Supermarket in St Petersburg rocked by large explosion

Ten people were injured and sent to hospitals when a homemade bomb detonated in a supermarket in St. Petersburg, Russia, officials said Wednesday.

Investigators are stopping short of calling it a terrorist attack, but say all angles are being considered.

The device that blew up late Wednesday in Russia's second-largest city contained an explosive force equivalent to 200 grams of TNT, the National Anti-Terrorist Committee said in a website statement.

The Sputnik news agency reported that the Committee believe an improvised explosive device "filled with projectiles" caused the blast. He went on to note that another attack was thwarted recently, a reference to an alleged series of bombings in St. Petersburg that a Central Intelligence Agency tip helped prevent, according to the Kremlin.

The Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case on the grounds of attempted mass murder after the blast.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the explosion, which occurred at a branch of the Perekrestok supermarket chain in the city's north-west Kalininsky district. Eight of the injured remained hospitalized. One of the suspects recently pled guilty to recruiting terrorist operatives for the Islamic State.

The Kremlin said the arrested suspects had planned to bomb the city's Kazan Cathedral and other crowded sites. Russian authorities identified the bomber as a 22-year old Kyrgyz-born Russian national.

The plane attack came a month after Putin ordered Russia's military to begin operations in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against rebel groups in that country's civil war.
