  • The attack the latest in a series to hit Afghan media groups in recent years follows an attack on a private television station in Kabul last month

At least 40 people have been killed and 30 others wounded in multiple blasts at a Shia cultural centre in Kabul on Thursday, officials said.

Afghan Voice - is the latest of a series of media organisations targeted by bomb attacks in the country.

According to them, there were at least two, maybe three suicide bombers who also used grenades in the attack.

"This gruesome attack underscores the dangers faced by Afghan civilians", Reuters reported rights group Amnesty International saying in a statement from its South Asia Director, Biraj Patnaik.

Sayed Abbas Hussaini, a journalist at the agency, said there appeared to have been more than one explosion during the attack, following an initial blast at the entrance to the compound.

"Resolute Support condemns the heinous attack on the Teyban Social and Cultural Center and the Afghan Voice Agency", Faulkner said.

In November, at least one security guard was killed as ISIL fighters stormed Shamshad TV, a private television station.

The Taliban immediately denied any involvement in the attack. Women and children were among the dead at the center, which accounted for the vast majority of the casualties.

A report issued by the AJSC in July reported different figures from that of Reporters Without Borders and said in the first six months of 2017, 10 journalists were killed and 73 cases of violence had been reported including "killing, beating, inflicting injury and humiliation, intimidation, and detention".

'It is said that target of attack was media center & education facility.
