A police officer who arrested Tantray in Delhi in 2003 said he had originally been recruited because at 4ft 2inches (1.27m) he did not look like a militant.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police SP Vaid said that the slain militant along with his associates were planning to attack a convoy on Srinagar-Jammu highway.

In occupied Kashmir, a complete shutdown was observed on the second consecutive day, today, in Tral and Aripal areas of south Kashmir's Pulwama district to mourn the killing of Noor Mohammed Tantray.

The 47-year-old Chhota Noora was reportedly the "chief architect" of a militant attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) camp outside the Srinagar International Airport in October. The security forces believe that his short stature was an advantage for him as nobody suspected him for a terrorist. "There were inputs about presence of 2/3 terrorists near NH, planning to attack a convoy", he tweeted.

Sources said Tantray was also found to be involved in the grenade attack on State PWD Minister Naeem Akhtar's cavalcade in Tral on September 21.

An encounter started last night based on information about the presence of two terrorists at Samboora village in Pulwama district.

Tantray's death comes as a success to the forces in the valley as he acted as a catalyst in the revival of JeM in South Kashmir since 2015. "He was convicted for life, however, the court had allowed him to serve his life sentence in Kashmir". Tantray has been a key commander in leading one of the wings of the locally powerful extremist organisation, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM).

Local media said that Tantray had become "a headache" for police after he jumped parole and took control of JeM south and central Kashmir. Eight security personnel - four each from the CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police - were killed in the encounter.

Tantray alias Noor Trali was during a cordon and search operation in Samboora village of Pampore in Pulwama district, yesterday.
