A dispatch official said the caller reported that his brother and sister-in-law were attacked by two of their neighbor's dogs. "They were both active within the community and just, like I said, two of the nicest people you would ever meet".

'The dogs belonged to 42 year old Johnny Dale Lankford who was already lodged in the Bell County Detention Center on charges he acquired Friday afternoon December 22nd for assault 2nd degree - domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment - 2nd degree, and a bench warrant.

The incident took place at 10:20 a.m. EST in Bell County in Arjay, Kentucky.

His brother, who heard the commotion, distracted the dogs long enough to allow Johnny Saylor to rush inside and grab a.22 caliber pistol.

The Bell County Sheriff's department said two dogs "savagely" attacked a couple, killing the wife. "It's overwhelming the circumstances and what he found", Steele said.

"Under no circumstances are you to engage this unsafe animal", the sheriff's department said. Her husband, Johnny Saylor, rushed outside to help only to be attacked by the dogs as well, according to WKRN.

Johnny Saylor suffered injuries to his head and arm while fending the animals off. The dog, which was wounded, had returned to the neighborhood and was put down by the Bell County Sheriff's Department and Bell County Animal Shelter. They are asking everyone in the Arjay area to stay away from the dog if sighted and call them immediately at 606-337-6174.

According to police, the dogs did not belong to the couple.

Also responding to the scene was Bell County EMS, Bell County Coroner Jay Steele, Bell County Animal Control Officer Patsy Bracken and assistance from the Kentucky State Police Post 10.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
