Photos and video from the scene showed the bus on the steps leading into the underground passageway.

A bus left a road in Moscow before ploughing into a subway entrance, leaving at least four people dead and 15 injured, Russian media say. Police said that the incident happened as the bus driver lost control of the bus.

Police are investigating two possible causes for the incident, a source told RIA Novosti. However, it is believed that the tragedy occurred either because of a auto accident with the participation of another vehicle or a technical failure of the bus.

Sirens were blaring around the metro station, with authorities preparing to pull the bus out of the underpass with a cable, an AFP correspondent at the scene said.

Monday was an ordinary working day in Russian Federation where Orthodox Christmas will be celebrated on January 7.

Some reports also said that the number of fatalities had risen to five people.

Passengers on-board and people walking on the steps near the Slavyansky Boulevard metro station were killed, police said.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has reportedly ordered all city buses be checked following the crash.

Ten ambulances, fire brigade officials, and three medivac helicopters were on the scene, agencies reported.
