  • Ryanair's German pilots to strike on Friday

Update 1.04pm: Strike action has been averted at Ryanair once again after the airline wrote to IMPACT setting out its plans to recognise the pilots' union.

"I would be very unsure about how many of our pilots will support this tomorrow", Bellew told Reuters, adding that the airline would be able to "catch up" by flights departing later if there was disruption.

The news comes on the same day as the trade union representing several Ryanair pilots and captains in Ireland confirmed that the airline now officially recognises it as the representative body of its pilots in Ireland.

In a statement Ryanair said it was recognising both the trade union and the pilot council for employees.

Ready to get started?

IMPACT has asked for a document confirming Ryanair's commitment to union recognition by midday, which it is expecting it will get before the deadline.

Update 4.35pm: Ryanair is facing a four hour strike by pilots in Germany three days before Christmas.

Earlier Thursday, Ryanair said it planned to hold more talks with the German union next month.

"Ryanair's public offer to conduct negotiations with VC can only be classified as a further publicity stunt".

In a letter to the union obtained by Bloomberg, Eddie Wilson, Ryanair's chief people office, proposed an agenda for the January meeting while saying the union delegation should be composed of VC officials and "currently employed Ryanair pilots in Germany".

It went on: "Ryanair has also submitted a set of proposals on pay and conditions, procedures and dispute resolution for its Irish based pilots, and looks forward to concluding an early agreement on these issues with its Irish Ryanair pilot company council". As a result, the danger of industrial action by Irish-based pilots had receded.

The Ryanair pilots in Germany said they had wanted to join their counterparts in Ireland, Italy as well as Portugal and mount a strike on Wednesday.

Ryanair has said that it also plans to move on to recognize flight-attendant unions in the new year.

"IMPACT said the company's confirmation that it recognised the union. and would conclude a comprehensive agreement, meant the danger of industrial action had receded for the present", it said in a statement.

"This breakthrough, which was made possible by the principled resolve of Ryanair pilots, should be an encouragement to workers across the economy".
