Flu activity in Kentucky now 'widespread'

  • Flu season activity is increasing across Pennsylvania headed into the holidays although it remains on pace with previous year's flue seasons

Officials report flu activity in Kentucky have reached widespread levels for the first time this flu season.

Flu season lasts from October through May.

Dr Kevin Kelleher, Director of the HPSC, said: "Prevention is better than cure, and the increase in flu activity means it is even more important to get your flu jab if you are in an at-risk group".

The week ending November 25 saw 204 flu and flu-like cases reported in the county.

The state's statistics cover the period from December 10-16.

Flu symptoms often include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills and muscle aches, and thousands of people die each year because of the flu, mostly among elderly people, according to the press release.

Tulsa Health Department officials last week in a prepared statement encouraged "all individuals six months and older to get a flu vaccination".

MCMC said "although many of our staff are fortunate to enjoy excellent health, even healthy individuals can get very sick from the flu and spread disease to others" as the basis for its flu shot/masking protocol. "Everyone is at risk for complications of the flu", she said.

Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs. That doesn't include people with the flu who haven't seen a health care provider to be tested, said Barbara Schneeman, RiverStone Health's public information officer. Persons who develop flu symptoms should seek medical advice about the need for a medical evaluation or treatment with an antiviral drug, which could shorten the course of the illness or reduce its severity. Cover your mouth when you cough. Germs spread this way.

Shots take about two weeks to take full effect.

Eat well and drink lots of fluids, such as water, soup and caffeine-free drinks.
