  • YouTube Remix Scores Licensing Deals With Major Labels with UMG and Sony Music

Many industry insiders believe that Facebook's brand new venture with Universal Music Group may present a challenge for one of its biggest competitors.

The two parties will also partake in developing 'experimental new music-based products to these Facebook platforms, with the goal of catalysing innovation to develop the next generation of music products that best engage social consumers'.

Right now, if Facebook's regular users upload videos that contain Universal's music, the videos will get taken down. Eventually, the FB x UMG collab will expand to also include access to UMG's library across multiple social features and music-based products, including a revamped Messenger app.

So, on the one hand this is what publishers and labels have been asking for in 2017 - an initial deal to license Facebook for the music contained within user-uploaded videos.

In a deal that is the first of its kind, Universal Music Group and Facebook have announced a partnership.

The partnership comes days after Bloomberg reported that YouTube had signed a long-term agreement with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment.

In terms of UMG, the move will monetize the use of music in social media for its artists.

"This partnership is an important first step demonstrating that innovation and fair compensation for music creators are mutually reinforcing - they thrive together. We look forward to Facebook becoming a significant contributor to a healthy ecosystem' for music that will benefit artists, fans and all those who invest in bringing great music to the world". YouTube has received criticism for not adequately paying artists for streams of their music videos.

And in August, the company launched Facebook Watch in the United States, a sub-section on the platform that like YouTube offers unique, quirky videos by homebody presenters unlikely to be cast by television executives.

"With this deal, Facebook has licensed content from the biggest player in the biggest genre of video on YouTube", he said.
