Apple admits it's slowing down old phones on objective

22 December, 2017, 01:10 | Author: Lydia Fleming

The company has confirmed it slows the performance of older iPhones to help reduce power demands and battery issues.

For a couple of years now there's been a problem occurring with older iPhones which saw them shutting down nearly inexplicably. According to Futuremark, Apple has not been deliberately slowing the phones. Tests completed by Geekbench appear to provide conclusive evidence that iOS restricts peak processor performance on devices with deteriorating batteries. Proof: My iPhone 6 was bought 3years ago and recently got really slow.

People anxious about performance could replace batteries, which Apple does for free for iPhones covered by warranty or for $79 if that is not the case.

It said: "My iPhone 6S has been very slow these past few weeks, and even after updating multiple times, it was still slow".

I don't know about you but to me this smells like a scam that encourages customers upgrade from what should be perfectly fine for several more years iphone's. Then I used my brother's iPhone 6 Plus and his was. faster than mine? So, I did some research, and made a decision to replace my battery. What Low Power Mode does is cut down on system requirements so your device can last longer.

Virtually all functions other than making phone calls may slow down as the device ages, reported CBS News' Anna Werner. That would obviously incentivize people to invest in the new, much speedier device. In addition to, like, blowing up, battery life will be adversely effected if you are using your iPhone for an extended period in direct sunlight.

Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices. "Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components", the company said. Introduced a year ago for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE, the feature is aimed at preventing unexpected device shutdowns, the company said.

Geekbench developer John Poole has mapped out performance for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time, and has come to the conclusion that Apple's iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates introduce this throttling for different devices. iOS 10.2.1 is particularly relevant, as this update was created to reduce random shutdown issues for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

Bogdanovich isn't the only one taking Apple to court over the iPhone slowdown.

All smartphone batteries degrade. "That is, your battery won't power your device as long on a given charge". This is called battery cycles.
