Evan Longoria's Stint With the Tampa Bay Rays Ends

21 December, 2017, 01:07 | Author: Rachael Silva
  • Prepare yourself for Evan Longoria, Giants third baseman, with an adorable Little League flashback

The Rays also kicked in an undisclosed amount of money to offset the $86 million owed to Longoria, the greatest player in the franchise's history, through 2022.

The Rays, in turn, receive top infielder prospect Christian Arroyo, minor league pitchers Matt Krook and Stephen Woods. For a team already loaded with aging veterans, the trade for Longoria carries significant risk for the Giants, as Longoria, 32, has shown signs of entering a decline phase, posting career-low numbers in 2017; he is, however, just a year removed from a 36-homer, .521-slugging season in 2016. His best three seasons happened to be his first three in MLB as he won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2008 and was named to the American League All-Star team in 2008, 2009, and 2010. "Evan gives us a Gold Glove-caliber player at third base and also provides us a middle-of-the-order presence in the lineup". Given a 2018 depth chart of Arroyo, the decrepit Pablo Sandoval, bespectacled utility infielder Kelby Tomlinson, and prospect Ryder Jones, acquiring a third baseman was a screaming need for the Giants, and Longoria represents a dramatic upgrade over the in-house solutions nearly no matter what he does next year. The other major league team in Florida, the Miami Marlins, also traded its career WAR leader, outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, this month, in a cost-cutting trade with the Yankees.

"This move fills an important need for our club and completes one of our offseason goals", said Brian Sabean, Giants executive vice president of baseball operations. San Francisco wanted a two-way threat, and Longoria's power and Gold Glove defense are exactly what the Giants were looking for in the trade market. Duffy can now take over the hot corner in Tampa Bay for years to come. Baseball doesn't work that way these days, and the structure of that extension Longoria signed all but demanded he be moved, given the Rays' customary payroll constraints.

Adding cash to sweeten the deal and taking on Span's contract ultimately helped the Rays nab Arroyo.

Longoria, alone, remained. His longevity with a franchise that can't afford to place much value in roster continuity stemmed in part from a decision Longoria made less than a week after being called up to the majors. If not they could keep him on a $13 million team option. With Longoria gone, expect Tampa to get aggressive about moving closer Alex Colome, starter Jake Odorizzi, and-most intriguing of all-staff ace Chris Archer.
