In line with ongoing advancements in facial recognition technology, Facebook will do this even if you're not tagged.
The new features debuting will be available everywhere except Europe and Canada, where privacy regulators have previously raised objections to Facebook's auto photo tagging feature, Sherman said.
Facebook announced Tuesday a new use for its facial recognition technology.
The feature likely won't be as annoying as described above, as Facebook's announcement post claims it only notifies you if "you're in a photo and part of the audience for that post", which presumably means if it was taken by a friend or a friend of a friend.
But Facebook doesn't shy from explaining that this service could also be used to catch people who are using photos for less-than-wholesome purposes, such as using your photo as their Facebook profile photo.
People gave us feedback that they would find it easier to manage face recognition through a simple setting, so we're pairing these tools with a single "on/off" control.
The features demonstrate how Facebook is using a trove of facial recognition data, a type of data that has become a key focus for tech titans. When photos and videos are uploaded to our systems, we compare those images to the template. Thanks to the technology, people that use screen readers will know who appears in photos that show up in their News Feed, even if people aren't tagged.
The company will also tell you when anyone - friend or not - uses a photo of you in their profile picture.
Rob Sherman, Facebook's deputy chief privacy officer, wrote about the positive potentials - unlocking phones, logging into bank accounts, making digital payments, organizing photos, finding missing or kidnapped children and helping officials confirm passport photos - and the bad - abuse by law enforcement, potential for racial bias and Big Brother-esque government surveillance. The site will now recognize new accounts made by people you have blocked and prevent the new account from sending you friend requests or messages. Apple replaced its fingerprint reader with a facial recognition camera to unlock its latest iPhone, and also uses facial recognition to sort photos.
