  • Sen. John Mc Cain was diagnosed with brain cancer in July

John McCain is heading home to Arizona to continue recovering from the side effects of chemotherapy for a brain tumor and will not be in Washington for the tax vote this week, two sources close to McCain confirmed to CNN.

President Trump told reporter's on Sunday that he spoke to McCain's wife, Cindy, and wished the couple well.

Thank you to everyone for their kind words.

In July, the 81-year-old senior senator from Arizona was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

The president says: "They've headed back, but I understand he'll come if we ever needed his help, which hopefully we won't".

Republicans hold a slim 52-48 advantage in the Senate, and McCain and Sen. But GOP leaders are likely to have enough Republicans to pass the measure.

Mr. McCain's office said in a statement on Sunday night that the senator, who had been hospitalized recently in the Washington area, would undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and "looks forward to returning to Washington in January". "My father is doing well and we are all looking forward to spending Christmas together in Arizona".

The sources described McCain as looking increasingly frail and said he has not spoken up in recent GOP meetings the way he had before, in addition to his absence this week for treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center.

"The senator has been through a round of chemo and he was hospitalized this week at Walter Reed", said Ben Domenech, a conservative writer and husband of Meghan McCain. House and Senate negotiators agreed Friday on a compromise bill that offers a substantial tax cut for corporations and across-the-board cuts for individuals, with final votes in the respective chambers expected this week, Fox News previously reported. Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said last week that they will vote for the measure after indicating earlier that they would not.

A vote is expected in the House and Senate on Tuesday. McCain eventually began using a wheelchair, and members of his staff pushed him where he needed to go.
