Former Senate leader urges funding UFO research: 'The truth is out there'

  • Feds reportedly spent $22M on mysterious UFO program

The subject of UFOs has been hotly contested since the famous Roswell incident of 1947, in which a flying disc-shaped object crashed at a ranch in Roswell, New Mexico. The odd aircraft - no claims are made about their possible origins or makeup - appear to hover briefly before sprinting away at speeds that elicit gasps and shouts from the pilots.

Many will see the Pentagon's decision to monitor and research UFO sightings as a tacit admission that there really are mysterious floating objects in the sky that are probably extraterrestrial in nature.

But according to the Times, certain aspects of the program still exist with officials from the program continuing to investigate encounters brought to them by service members, while these officials still carry out their other duties within the Defense Department.

The acknowledgment came in response to media inquiries, which were generated in part by a start-up company Elizondo has joined since retirement.

"The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program ended in the 2012 timeframe", Pentagon spokesman Tom Crosson told CNN.

The UFO investigations were run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagon's C Ring.

The US Department of Defense says the program stopped in 2012, but the "New York Times" says UFO investigations continue. Officials insisted that the effort had ended after five years in 2012.

But the Pentagon was less clear about whether the UFO program continued to hover somewhere in the vast expanse of the defense establishment. Bigelow has spoken about his belief in UFOs visiting the United States as well as the existence of aliens.

"This is about science and national security". The New York Times writes that documentaries related to this program talk about weird aircraft flying at high speed or floating. The Washington Post conducted several confidential interviews over two months with Elizondo and Christopher Mellon, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence who also is an officer of the private firm.

The program was initially funded at the request of then Senator Harry Reid, the chamber's majority leader at the time and a long-time enthusiast of space phenomena, the Times said.

Mr. Reid, who retired from Congress this year, said he was proud of the program. "In the end, however, I couldn't carry out that mission, because the department - which was understandably overstretched - couldn't give it the resources that the mounting evidence deserved".

There, between 2007 and 2012, a team of researchers working with experts in Nevada investigated reports of aliens and unusual sightings over the American skies.

One of the pilots said that the mysterious rotating aircrafts were "going against the 120mph wind". The pilot would only speak on the condition of anonymity. "I've done something that no one has done before", Reid said.
