United States blames North Korea for major cyber attack

In the op-ed we did not see traces of the evidence used to link the May attack to the "Lazarus Group" (also blamed for the Sony Pictures hacking incident) and North Korea, but the White House will reportedly follow up Tuesday with a more formal statement. In just a few days, WannaCry managed to infect upwards of 300,000 machines in almost 150 countries.

North Korea was "directly responsible" for the WannaCry ransomware cyberattack in May, according to Tom Bossert, homeland security adviser to US President Donald Trump, in an op-ed published by the Wall Street Journal on Monday.

South Korea also a year ago accused North Korea of hacking the personal data of more than 10 million users of an online shopping site and dozens of email accounts used by government officials and journalists.

Pointing to threats outside of North Korea, Bossert said preventing similarly massive cyber incidents would take concentrated effort and that President Donald Trump had taken steps in the right direction, such as ordering the modernization of government information technology to enhance the security of United States computer systems and the sharing of software vulnerabilities with developers.

"As we make the internet safer, we will continue to hold accountable those who harm or threaten us, whether they act alone or on behalf of criminal organizations or hostile nations".

Bossert also warned that North Korea's "malicious behavior" has been ramping up, but that the U.S. government intends to respond. "WannaCry was indiscriminately reckless", Bossert wrote.

Other governments and private companies including the United Kingdom and Microsoft agree with the US's conclusion, he said.

Bossert warned of the threat from Russian hackers and touted legal action taken against suspected hackers as well as the Trump administration's decision to ban software from the Russia-based company Kaspersky Lab in government computers. A few weeks ago, we charged three Chinese nationals for hacking, theft of trade secrets and identity theft.

"The US is trying to shift responsibility for tensions on the Korean Peninsula to us with its dialogue offensive", the North Korean daily Rodong Sinmun said in a report.

Within days of the attack in May, North Korea fell under suspicion.
