A mother and three children were killed in a fire that spread quickly throughout their Sheepshead Bay home early Monday morning.

Friends and neighbours said the family was known to light menorah candles in celebration of Hanukkah.

At a news conference, the city's fire commissioner warned about the holiday dangers of candles, overloaded outlets and power strips.

The 40-year-old mother, Aliza Azam, and her two sons, aged 11 and 7, and a daughter, 3, did not escape.

Joseph Azan is in critical condition at Staten Island University Hospital, and his two teenagers "are in critical condition and fighting for their lives", Nigro said.

Commissioner Nigro said the fire appears to be accidental.

Firefighters said unattended candles, overloaded outlets and power strips "and numerous holiday traditions we all hold dear" often cause fires. "It was early morning, everyone in the house was asleep", Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

In all, nine people were in the house: the couple, their six children and a cousin.

The fire broke out just before 2:30 a.m. on East 14th Street in Sheepshead Bay. Azam and two of his other children suffered critical injuries. "There were big flames shooting out the front of the house", he said. "Such a handsome family". "We will continue working with FDNY to promote fire safety, especially during the winter months when there's an increased risk of fires".

"We believe that he acted very courageously and tried desperately", Nigro said, according to the New York Post.

Firefighters arrived within 2 1/2 minutes of the first 911 call, but Nigro said the flames were already "consuming" all three floors of the building. "The units, knowing there were people in the home, pushed in very aggressively". As a parent, it's impossible for me to imagine what this family is going through right now. The objective of the mayor's remarks was to place responsibility for safety entirely on the residents by urging them to be careful about "decorations, electric lights, candles, space heaters and other items".
