  • Trump says not considering firing United States special counsel Mueller

Special counsel Robert Mueller, the former FBI director now overseeing a sweeping investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 elections and any possible ties to President Donald Trump and his associates, secretly obtained tens of thousands of emails from the administration's transition team.

The letter also makes a specific claim about communication between the government and the campaign - that Richard Beckler, then the general counsel of the GSA, "acknowledged unequivocally to [the Trump campaign's] legal counsel" in a June 15 discussion that the Trump campaign "owned and controlled" emails, and that "any requests for the production of PTT records would therefore be routed to legal counsel for [the Trump campaign]".

"Well, it's a shame what's happened with the FBI", Trump said.

The letter added that a warrant should have been obtained for such materials, and said it violated the Presidential Transition Act.

Fox News first reported the existence of the letter, following an Axios report about the emails having been obtained by Special Counsel's Office.

But later the same day a top Trump transition team official once again casted aspersions over the legitimacy of the investigation, sending a letter to several congressional committees claiming that Mueller's team improperly obtained thousands of emails from the General Services Administration (GSA).

Langhofer puts much of the blame for the move on a career government employee, GSA Deputy Counsel Lenny Loewentritt, who he says was present for those assurances.

"GOP voices are accusing the team assembled by special counsel Robert Mueller of bias against President Trump - and they're appearing to set the stage for some action".

The special counsel reportedly got the email trove from the GSA, not from Trump For America, a still-functioning arm of Trump's transition team. He did not name the transition officials who used the devices.

"I was at dinner last night with the President and Vice President". "The President's lawyers have said they want to fully comply with Special Counsel Mueller's investigation, so it is odd that they now suggest they would have withheld key documents from federal investigators". They also follow Mueller's removal of one of his investigators after learning he had exchanged text messages with an Federal Bureau of Investigation attorney that showed bias against then-candidate Trump.

Late Saturday, Mueller's spokesman, Peter Carr, said the special counsel's office has followed the law when it has obtained documents during its investigation.

The Trump administration has pledged its cooperation with Mueller so far.

"I know what he's doing", Rosenstein said. "I think that would be a mistake myself".

"As the WH has persistently said for months, there is no consideration being given to firing the Special Counsel with whom we continue to cooperate with the expectation of an appropriate and timely result".

As it stands, Mueller's team has secured indictments against Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Manafort's business associate Rick Gates.
