Suspected Attacker in New York Explosion Wore a "Low-Tech" Device

  • Manhattan 'explosion': Police responding to reports of incident at bus terminal

Fox News reported that the attacker made the device at his job at an electrical company and there were no known co-conspirators.

Type of device: Ullah wore an "improvised low-tech explosive device attached to his body", which he intentionally detonated, Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.

Three people who were in the immediate area of the explosion suffered minor injuries, such as headaches and ringing in their ears, officials said.

He reportedly carried out the attack in retaliation against Israel for its actions in the embattled Gaza territory. Tensions have been particularly high in the region of late in part because of President Donald Trump's recent decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, formally recognizing the city as the capital of Israel and Israeli property.

The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission told Reuters the suspect had a limousine's driver license from 2012 to 2015, which then expired.

Bangladesh police are continuing to investigate Mr Ullah's background, police said. Ullah can be seen in the video down on the ground.

On Monday morning, authorities responded to what appears to be a detonation near Port Authority bus terminal in Times Square.

Port Authority police moved quickly and strategically, arresting Ullah at gunpoint on the spot. He was described him as "having wires coming out of him".

"It's some type of explosion of unknown origin and the building is being evacuated as we speak", a police spokesman said. The suspect was not fired upon while being apprehended, authorities state.

Joon Kim, acting US attorney for the Southern District of NY, said at a news conference today that Ullah allegedly aimed to "murder as many innocent human beings as he could and to blow himself up in the process - all in support of a vicious terrorist cause".

He added that authorities have put in enormous effort in preventing a significant number of plots and attacks. "These incidents are happening too frequently".

"This was an attempted terrorist attack", Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters more than two hours after the explosion.

"The choice of NY is always for a reason, because we are a beacon to the world", the mayor said.

Mr Ullah was a permanent United States resident, living in Brooklyn, New York City. "But we are also outraged by the behavior of law enforcement officials during this investigation", the statement continued.

"Let's be clear, this was an attempted terrorist attack".

The New York City Fire Department had earlier confirmed one nonlife-threatening injury at the scene of the explosion.
