The man was arrested and then taken to an Amsterdam hospital as police began investigations at the scene and travelers who had been ushered outside were allowed back into the airport.

He said "the circumstances are telling us that it has nothing to do with terrorism".

Military police have shot a man after he threatened to use a knife at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The police haven't confirmed whether the incident was related to terror.

In a Tweet, the police said the man was "known to police in connection with previous violent incidents".

A worker at a fast food shop told AFP she saw a man "waving a knife around" before hearing a single shot. In a tweet, the Marechaussee police said that the "situation is safe" and the accused has been detained.

There are no further details about the suspect or his motives as yet.

The emergency prompted the authorities to evacuate part of Schiphol, one of Europe's busiest airports.

"Air traffic is experiencing no further consequences".

The video footage shows police officers running through Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport as the gunshots are fired. No other injuries have been reported. In addition, the Amsterdam airport's terminal was evacuated but has since reopened.

Schiphol is one of Europe's top five busiest airports and handled more than 60 million passengers previous year.
