  • Fransen's group have been widely accused of Islamophobia over their rallies and protests

A leader of a British far-right group, whose anti-Islamic posts were retweeted by US President Donald Trump causing outrage in Britain, was arrested in Northern Ireland yesterday minutes after being bailed over a separate incident.

The deputy leader of far-right group Britain First was arrested in Belfast for incitement to hatred.

Ms Fransen appeared in the dock at Belfast Magistrate's Court on Thursday and spoke only to confirm that she understood the charges.

He has been bailed to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court in January.

Jayda Fransen, from Anerley in south-east London, has been charged with using words which were threatening, abusive or insulting during a speech in Belfast in the summer.

Fransen posted a tweet showing her at a wall used to divide Catholic residents from Protestants in the city to prevent violence.

She shot another anti-Muslim video in Belfast and posted it online on Wednesday.

She has been taken to a Belfast city centre police station for interview, police said.

Fransen gained global notoriety after her anti-Muslim video clips were retweeted by U.S. President Donald Trump last month, a move criticized by U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May.

Police had sought curbs on her ability to participate in future rallies in Northern Ireland, as well as social media use.

Fransen was fined last month after being found guilty by a court in England of religiously aggravated harassment for shouting abuse at a Muslim woman wearing a hijab.

Around a dozen people in the public gallery watched her appearance, which was adjourned until later on Thursday to hear a bail application.

Police had attempted to limit her use of social media as part of bail conditions, but the judge, Fiona Bagnall, denied their request.

Ms Fransen's lawyer said: "This lady is as entitled to free expression within the law as anyone else".

She is due to appear in court in Belfast again on Friday morning.

However, the detective said they were concerned "here would be further offences and also concerns about public order".
