  • BLAZING SKIES Where to spot the annual Geminids meteor shower at the Coast

The annual Geminid meteor shower will peak between 7:30 p.m. December 13 and dawn December 14, with rates around one per minute, according to NASA. There will be some straggling meteors on the evening of December 14, but the shower is expected to peak on the evening of December 13, between midnight and 4a.m. If this orbit intersects with Earth's orbit, this debris catches fire, "leaving a streak of light we call a meteor or shooting star", according to Cooke.

People willing to courageous the outdoor cold temperatures will be treated to one of the best meteor showers of the year tonight.

The name "Geminids" comes from the constellation Gemini as the meteors appear to spark outward from the star formation.

You just need some warm clothing and your eyes to see a meteor shower in person. This geometry is known to produce a few "earthgrazers" or meteors with long bright trails skimming the upper atmosphere at a low angle. Thanks to the waning crescent moon, it'll be easier to see the debris fall from space this year. There should be over 100 meteors per hour. The Geminids feature broad activity and will be visible across any parts of the night sky.

You don't need any special equipment to see the shower, but you do need a fair bit of patience.

The way meteor showers come about is very interesting. The burned up dust and grit of the asteroid results in the massive meteor shower of the year. The Geminid Meteor Shower will be at its most visible and brightest this evening, and if you've got a clear sky, some warm gear, and a little time, you can see some pretty fantastic fireballs and lights.

The Geminids activity is "slowly increasing", according to a new study where experts reviewed visual observations of the meteor shower from 1985 to 2016 and video observations from 2011 to 2016. NASA will stream the shower live from its Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, beginning at sunset.

"Even if you're facing west, if you see a meteor, and if it's a Geminid meteor, you'll see it will trace all the way back from east-northeast".
