Moon is now on a four-day state visit to China that began Wednesday. Such action was said to be in retaliation for that country's decision to install the USA -supplied Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system close to Chinese territory as a counter to North Korean missile tests. While the two share a common goal of the denuclearization of the peninsula, China disapproves of South Korea's joint military drills with the US and the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system which, Beijing claims, could interfere with their country's defense system.

Moon is hoping to use his first visit to China since taking office in May to build support for a diplomatic solution to a crisis that has grown steadily through the year.

Moon kicked off his trip to China yesterday and spoke of the need to get bilateral economic exchanges back on track.

Concerts in China by major K-pop artists have been halted since the second half of 2016, South Korean celebrities dropped from advertisements and South Korean dramas all but disappeared from Chinese TV channels this year, Korean entertainment industry officials said.

South Korea does not censor or control its media like China does.

Publicly revealing its displeasure with THAAD, Beijing has banned a sale of group tours of its citizens to South Korea and imposed boycotts on South Korean firms operating within China.

South Korean photographers protested after security personnel stopped them from following Moon's delegation.

Media in South Korea had previously reported that Chinese authorities had either banned Chinese tourist travel to South Korea or reduced the volume of such trade, with effect from autumn past year - including to the casino holiday island of Jeju.

Anti-South Korean sentiment has also battered firms' sales of entertainment, cosmetics and cars in China.
