One person is dead and 18 others have been injured in an explosion at a natural gas facility near Austria's border with Slovakia.

The gas plant, belonging to the Austrian global oil and gas company OMV, erupted in flames at around 9 the municipality of Baumgarten an der March, located 40 km to the east of Vienna, Efe news reported.

"The fire brigade, the rescue service and the police have been set up in coordinated coordination with the district headquarters, the Red Cross and the state police headquarters, with the focus now on rescue. the police helicopter is in action to provide a comprehensive picture of the situation", Lower Austrian Provincial Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner said, as quoted by Heute. Police and Gas Connect Austria said they believed a technical fault was to blame.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said a number of cars in the auto park had melted due to the heat and six buildings were on fire.

The shock waves of the blast have already been felt far beyond the boundaries of the station, which serves as a crucial hinge point between gas suppliers in Russian Federation and Norway and pipelines sending that gas on to Italy, the United Kingdom and other European countries.

Slovakia's main gas transit route to Austria was suspended after the explosion, Slovak pipeline operator Eustream said.

Neighboring Italy's Economic Development Ministry declared an emergency after the explosion interrupted the flow of natural gas to the country, but said Italy's supply of gas would be ensured by existing stockpiles.

The price of both crude oil and natural gas spiked as investors anxious that the vital pieces of infrastructure could be out of commission for weeks, choking off supplies. The facility receives about 40bn cubic metres of gas per year.
