Sensex zooms 301 points to close at 33250; Nifty finishes at 10265

  • Sensex soars 301 points reclaims 33,000-mark

The benchmark Sensex on Friday pierced through the 33,000-mark amid heavy buying by cash-rich domestic institutions and strong overseas cues.

The Sensex touched a high of 33,285.68 points and a low of 33,034.20 during the intra-day trade.

BSE Sensex closed higher by 301.09 points to 33,250.30, while the Nifty 50 rose 98.95 points to close at 10,265.65. Fear gauge India VIX ease 3 percentage points to 13.86.

Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty soared 122.60 points, or 1.22 per cent, to close at 10166.70 after hovering between 10061.90 and 10182.65.

"The buying momentum in Indian markets was given a boost by hopes that the ruling BJP would win the critical state elections in Gujarat, which would lay the groundwork for the general elections in 2019".

The BSE market breadth was bullish - 1,851 advances and 828 declines.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth net Rs. 1,075.62 crore yesterday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought to the tune of Rs. 926.68 crore.

Sun Pharma, BPCL, IOC, ITC and HPCL climbed 3-4 percent in the Nifty pack, while SBI, Reliance Industries, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, GAIL and Infratel lost 1-2 percent.

Major gainers were Maruti 2.27 per cent, Bharti Airtel 2.09 per cent, Tata Motors 2.03 per cent, Tata Steel 1.96 per cent and ONGC 1.72 per cent.

All the sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) traded in the green with the auto, media, metals and PSU banking indices gaining over 1%, during the day.

In keeping with the overall trend, the small-cap and mid indices rose 1 percent and 0.89 percent. Japan's Nikkei advanced 1.45%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng went up 0.29%, while China's Shanghai Composite Index surrendered 0.67%. London's FTSE was up 0.27 percent.
